Understanding the Role of a Facial Plastic Surgeon
A Facial Plastic Surgeon is a medical specialist trained in performing surgical procedures focused exclusively on the face, head, and neck. Their expertise spans both cosmetic and reconstructive surgery, aiming either to enhance a person’s appearance or to restore form and function following trauma, congenital anomalies, or disease.
What sets facial plastic surgery apart from other surgical disciplines is the precision and artistry required. The human face is a highly visible and expressive area, where even the most subtle change, just a few millimeters, can significantly impact the overall aesthetic balance. This is why facial plastic surgeons undergo rigorous training in both otolaryngology (head and neck surgery) and advanced plastic surgical techniques, ensuring they have a deep understanding of facial anatomy, skin structure, and the nuanced interplay of facial features.
From rhinoplasty and facelifts to eyelid surgery and chin augmentation, these specialists strive to deliver natural-looking results that respect the individuality of each patient. Whether the goal is to reverse signs of aging, refine certain features, or reconstruct facial structures, the hallmark of facial plastic surgery lies in its combination of science, technique, and aesthetic judgment. The anatomy of the face and neck is complex and it was this complexity that motivated me to pursue a career in Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery.
My background in Otolaryngology and Head and Neck Surgery means that 100% of my training was performed operating in and around the facial area. During my residency, I was involved in many complex head and neck cancer resections and reconstructions. I was priviledged to do my training at the Bethesda Naval Hospital where reconstruction and cosmetic surgery were made up an unusually high percentage of our cases.
As a result, when I left the Navy I had performed numerous facial laser resurfacing procedures, facelifts, rhinoplasties, blepharoplasties and browplasties. I was able to sit for my boards, which were a comprehensive written and oral exam, ultimately achieving certification by the American Board of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery thereafter.
I am thankful for all the great teachers and patients that I have met along the way. Without them, I could not have become the physician I am today. If you have questions about facial plastic surgery or my practice, please feel free to call us at (239) 481-9292.
