Over time, gravity combines with a decrease in two proteins that are very important to maintaining our youthful appearance: collagen and elastin. The result? Wrinkles, sagging, loose skin and jowls begin to take hold and change the way we look.

Facelift is one of the most effective and long-lasting solutions to this problem. Perhaps this is why many people ask us about the different types of facelifts. Here Dr. Douglas Stevens fills you in.

The Facelift

Dr. Stevens offers a procedure called vertical vector facelift that provides a very natural and long-lasting result. The procedure is done under IV sedation anesthesia and takes around three hours. Incisions are made in the temples, extending down the hairline behind the ears. The deep layers of skin are lifted and repositioned and excess fat and skin are removed before closing the incisions. Patients often report that the results make them look 10 to 15 years younger. Facelift results can last for 10 years or more.

A facelift can be combined with other surgical procedures like eyelid lift or brow lift, or with non-invasive treatments like Bellafill injections, Morpheus8 or CO2 laser resurfacing, for increased effects. Stevens Facial Plastic & Laser Center is the first American plastic surgery office to utilize the MLS laser system to expedite healing. This innovative technology is painless and helps reduce swelling.

There will be no hair loss, and scarring is minimal. After a recovery of about 10 to 14 days, most patients return to work and/or social activities. Recovery care details and length of time depend on the specifics of your surgery, but full recovery may take up to six weeks.

The Mini Facelift

A modified version of facelift called a “mini” facelift is similar in some ways to traditional facelift but has some key differences.

Traditional facelifts are recommended for moderate to severe signs of aging. If you have early signs of mild to moderate wrinkles or loose lower facial skin and no notable sagging skin issues under the chin or neck, you may be a good candidate for a mini facelift.

Anesthesia, surgical process and recovery are similar to that of a regular facelift. Surgery and recovery time may be slightly shorter than with a traditional facelift. The incisions are more minor with a mini face lift and therefore scarring is less significant. The procedure only targets the middle and lower areas of the face. If you are concerned about the appearance of sagging skin beneath the chin, a traditional facelift may be a better fit.

The results of a mini facelift can last 10 or more years. Sometimes, the procedure is combined with other procedures such as eyelid surgery or brow lift to enhance a youthful appearance.
