Facelift & Botox in Fort Myers

Most people focus their anti-aging efforts on the face. But often the neck needs attention, too.  With age, the platysma muscles of the neck can weaken, contributing to the appearance of noticeable vertical lines or “bands.” Displaced fat and thinning skin can accentuate the appearance of the bands.

There is no need to wear a turtleneck every day to hide platysma bands. If you want to keep platysma bands at bay and enjoy an elegant neck contour, Dr. Douglas Stevens offers a few solutions. Our board-certified facial plastic surgeon will carefully evaluate your facial and neck anatomy, explain your options and help you decide the most suitable course of action.

Facelift Surgery Versus Botox Injections

Two of the most effective ways to treat noticeable neck bands are with facelift surgery and Botox injections.

Facelift Surgery

For patients who do not want a “quick fix,” facelift is a great option. The surgical procedure minimizes signs of aging in the mid and lower face and neck, including platysma banding, by altering the muscles, tissues and skin.

Incisions are made at the temples, extending down the hairline and around the ears; an additional incision may be made under the chin. Through the incisions, the underlying tissues and muscles are tightened and displaced fat is restored to its normal position. The skin is then re-draped more smoothly over the facial structures.

Pros

  • More thorough and dramatic results
  • Comprehensive correction in the face and neck
  • One-time procedure and cost

Cons

  • Requires anesthesia and incisions
  • Requires recovery downtime
  • Incisions leave scars (although scars usually fade well with the proper care)

Botox Injections

For patients who are hesitant to undergo surgery, Botox is an alluring alternative. The injectable is made from a purified neurotoxin that temporarily paralyzes specific muscles in the face and neck. As the targeted muscle relaxes, the overlying skin appears smoother and more youthful. A few well-placed Botox injections can relax the platysma muscles so the vertical bands become less noticeable.

Pros

  • Quick “lunchtime” treatment
  • Virtually no pain
  • No recovery downtime needed
  • Results appear within a few days

Cons

  • A temporary solution; regular injections every three to four months are required to maintain the effects
  • Inconvenience of repeat injections
  • The cost of repeat injections can add up
