Winter Skin Care Tips

Fort Myers and the surrounding Florida areas are fortunate to enjoy some of the mildest winters in the entire country. While other cities experience blizzards and below-freezing temperatures, our winters are extremely forgiving.

However, there are still some changes that occur in the winter months that can affect your skin. Read on as Dr. Douglas Stevens shares the essential elements of a great winter skin care routine.

Switch Up Your Moisturizer

As the temperatures get a little bit cooler, you might notice your skin becomes drier and tighter. If your summertime moisturizer is no longer keeping your skin hydrated and supple, switch it out for a heavier, oil-based moisturizer. Ingredients like hyaluronic acid, glycerin and shea butter help to lock in moisture longer.

Pick a Gentle Cleanser

If your skin is drier and tighter in the cooler winter months, make sure you are not over-scrubbing it, which can dry it out even more. Use a very gentle cleanser that will not strip your skin of its natural oils.

Don’t Forget about Sunscreen

Even though the sun may not feel as harsh in the winter as it does during the rest of the year, you are still vulnerable to sun damage. The sun does not have to feel hot or strong to damage your skin. Apply broad-spectrum sunscreen whenever going outdoors and reapply frequently.

And don’t forget to pack your sunscreen if you are planning a getaway to a colder climate. At higher altitudes, you are exposed to a lot of UV radiation, so it is important to load up on sunscreen while skiing, snowboarding or simply walking around outdoors.

Drink More Water and Less Alcohol

Another trick to keeping your skin looking luminous during the winter months is to ramp up your water intake and limit the amount of alcohol you drink. Alcohol can dehydrate you, so it is best to enjoy it in moderation.

Getting the proper nutrition can also help your skin look its best. Try to incorporate more antioxidant-rich foods like berries, dark leafy greens and nuts into your diet.
