CALMING NERVES ABOUT PLASTIC SURGERY

It’s very common to feel a little nervous about a scheduled plastic surgery procedure. In fact, it would be unusual not to experience any nerves or anxiety before surgery!

However, prepping for plastic surgery shouldn’t be scary or intimidating. Talking through your nerves with your plastic surgeon is a great way to relax and feel more in control as you prepare for your operation. Dr. Douglas Stevens welcomes anyone that feels nervous or anxious about plastic surgery to reach out to him. He also recommends trying some of the following tips to reduce pre-surgery nerves.

Research Your Procedure

One of the best ways to alleviate anxiety about surgery is to educate yourself about your procedure. Feeling well-informed about your surgery takes some of the mystery out of the experience, which in turn reduces anxiety. Pre-operative consultations are an opportune time to learn about your planned operation. You should also take time to do your homework so you feel as informed and educated as possible.

Review Your Surgeon’s Credentials

No one is more invested in your safety and well-being than your plastic surgeon. It may settle your nerves to re-familiarize yourself with your surgeon’s credentials and experience. Re-read your surgeon’s bio and check out his or her gallery of before-and-after images.

If you are seeing a reputable surgeon, remember that they probably perform your procedure numerous times in a week, if not in a day! Discuss your doubts or fears with your surgeon — they have undoubtedly helped numerous patients in your shoes.

Try Some Common Coping Mechanisms

What do you normally do when you’re stressed? Do you enjoy yoga or meditation? Do you take long walks along a beautiful path? Turn to family or friends for support? Try some of your normal coping mechanisms to see if they help you relax. Practice some deep breathing or visualization exercises to put yourself into a good mindset.

Focus on Your Recovery and Results

Instead of worrying what could go wrong, focus your energy on your recovery and results. Prep for recovery by filling prescriptions, stocking your fridge and cabinets with easy-to-make meals and snacks and arranging your recovery space (e.g., your couch or bed) with the essentials. Visualize how you will look after surgery, and how confident you will feel in your rejuvenated appearance.
