PREPARING FOR FACIAL PLASTIC SURGERY: WHAT TO KNOW
By Published On: January 20, 2017Categories: Facial Plastic Surgery, Surgical ProceduresComments Off on Preparing for Facial Plastic Surgery: What to Know

The success of your facial plastic surgery depends largely on the skill and experience of the surgeon you select. However, there are a few things you can do on your own to increase the likelihood of a smooth operation and recovery. Some of these are merely following instructions given by the surgical team and others are tips and tricks picked up by former facelift or eyelid surgery patients.

Here, Fort Myers facial plastic surgeon Douglas Stevens shares what you can do during the pre-operative planning stage to boost your chances of a safe and successful experience.

Clear Your Calendar for Recovery

The most important thing to do when preparing for plastic surgery is to plan for a recovery period, during which you will spend most of your time resting. Keep at least two weeks after your surgery clear of work, social and family obligations. Dr. Stevens will advise you as to when it is safe for you to resume work and other normal activities.

Prep Your Recovery Space

Make sure your home is well stocked with all of the provisions you will need after surgery. This includes filled prescriptions, plenty of easy-to-prepare meals, liquids, comfortable blankets and pillows, entertainment and anything else you think you may find helpful after an operation. Set up your recovery supplies by your bed or a large recliner in the living room, so that when you return home after surgery, you can immediately assume a comfortable spot.

Get in the Best Health Possible

In the weeks leading up to your surgery, concentrate on eating well, staying hydrated, exercising regularly and getting enough sleep at night. Do not smoke. The goal is not to be as thin as possible (so avoid any crash diets or appetite suppressants) but to be in optimal health. You want to nourish your body and maximize its healing capacity before you go into surgery.

Stop Certain Medications

Dr. Stevens will provide you with a list of prescription medications, over-the-counter drugs, vitamins and supplements with anti-inflammatory properties that are known to thin the blood. You must stop taking all of these medications at least two weeks prior to surgery. Nicotine products are also forbidden during this time.

Please note that this information is for general educational purposes only. Every case is unique and each patient must follow the individualized instructions provided by his or her surgeon.
