Recently the FDA approved Bellafill® for the treatment of acne scarring. Acne scarring is a difficult condition to treat since there can be tethers from the skin to the underlying structures. Disruption of this scarring and supporting the skin as well as preventing reformation of the scar tether with a long duration filler like Bellafill® makes has been shown to give statistically significant improvement to those who suffer with this condition. The acne scars amenable to treatment with Bellafill® are those that are like rolling hills. Ice pick or “box car” scars are different and are treated in a different manner.

By selecting the appropriate candidate and utilizing Bellafill® in addition to other modalities such as fractional CO2 laser or micro needle technology (Dermapen) we can improve the appearance of those with acne scars in a lasting fashion. In my practice, we have been using Bellafill® for over 14 months and have been very pleased with the results that we have achieved. We find that unlike other fillers with only 9-12 months duration, Bellafill® actually looks fuller at one year than after the immediate completion of our injections. Bellafill® is placed in the office under topical crème anesthesia. The micro cannula technique that I am using has greatly reduced bruising and most people have zero down time after injection.

My most common use for Bellafill® has been for volumization of the midface and to correct the hollowness that can form under the eyes regaining the youthful “heart shape” to the face. It has been previously FDA approved for use in filling of the grooves from the nose to the corner of the mouth (nasolabial folds). I am pleased to have the FDA recognize its importance in the treatment of acne scars and look forward to future FDA recognition of the role this material can play in treatment of facial aging and reconstruction.
